To our family scattered across the Caribbean, the African continent, and every corner of the diaspora —
We see you. We claim you. And we are calling you home.
For too long, the descendants of those who were taken and those who were left have been kept apart — not by choice, but by design. The same colonizers who drew borders across Africa and scattered our ancestors across oceans also worked to convince us we were strangers to one another. They taught us to see differences instead of family. They taught African Americans, Caribbean people, and Africans on the continent to look at each other with distance instead of recognition.
We reject that teaching.
African Americans were not born on the continent — but Africa was never something we left behind. It lives in us. It is in the rhythm of our speech, the strength of our communities, the resilience passed down through generations who refused to be erased. Africa is not a place we have to return to in order to claim — it is already ours, carried in the blood and the spirit. And that same inheritance runs through our Caribbean family, our African family, and every Black person in the diaspora, wherever the ships or the borders happened to leave us.
We know we carry real cultural differences — different languages, different foods, different histories of struggle and survival. We are not asking anyone to erase that. Our differences are part of what makes this family rich. But underneath the differences is one people, one bloodline of resistance and brilliance, one story interrupted by the same forces.
This is why we’re building Metro Black SanAntonian.
As we prepare to launch our mobile app, we want to be clear about who this is for: it is for every Black person in the San Antonio metro area — African American, Caribbean, African, and anyone from the diaspora who calls this city home. This is not a space with narrow gates. If you are Black and you are here, you belong here.
What we have, we will share. What we know, we will teach. This website, and the app that follows it, is being built as a gathering place — a place to connect across the lines we were taught to draw, to learn each other’s stories, and to move together as the one people we have always been.
The separation is over. The invitation is open. Welcome home.
